Why Does Hair Fall Out During Chemotherapy???

free hair consultation

The majority of chemotherapy drugs focus on fast growing cells.  Cancer cells are typically fast growing. Therefore, are targeted and destroyed  by the drugs that are given for the disease.  The problem is, these drugs are unable to distinguish between healthy and cancerous cells, so they also destroy the other fast growing cells such as hair growth cells and white blood cells.

Knowing what to buy is vital to a natural appearance!

Everyone thinks they can pick out the guy wearing a hairpiece. This is because in the past the materials used were heavy and the construction methods were somewhat crude. the long list of popular slang terms including toupee, wig and rug.

Times have changed. These days, due to a better understanding about how the hair grows, plus advanced construction materials, what used to be called a “hairpiece” is now referred to as a “hair system”.

There are two very different types of hair systems available; Stock and Custom. The names should indicate the biggest
difference between them.

Brushing to Grow Hair?

Brushing to Grow Hair?

brushing

The idea of brushing the hair 100 times a day to stimulate the scalp circulation is a fantasy. In fact, if you brush your hair too much, you may end up injuring and losing hair.
This myth stems from the thought that hair loss was due to poor circulation and that brushing or massaging would improve blood flow and nutrition to the follicles. The truth is, bald or not, there’s no major difference in scalp circulation.

Hair loss – Myths & Facts

Hair loss – Myths & Facts

hair loss

Myth #1

Genes for hair loss come only from the mother’s side of the family.
Fact: Although the inheritance from the mother’s side is slightly stronger, androgenetic hair loss (common baldness) can be inherited from the mother’s side of the family, the father’s side –- or both.

Myth #2

Men who are bald have high levels of testosterone.
Fact: This myth falls into the same category as the “size of a man’s hands or feet…” Hair loss is caused by a greater sensitivity of hair follicles in some parts of the scalp to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), rather than to increased levels of testosterone per se. DHT causes the hair follicles to shrink (miniaturize) and eventually disappear. If elevated levels of testosterone were the problem, then “all” of ones body hair should be expected to fall out as well.

Myth #3

A sign of genetic baldness is seeing large amounts of hair fall out.
Fact: In contrast to popular belief, going bald is not due to massive amounts of hair falling out, but rather by normal thickness hair gradually being replaced by finer, thinner hairs -– a process called “miniaturization.” If large patches of hair start suddenly falling out, it is time to see your doctor.

Myth #4

Hair loss is caused by decreased blood flow to the scalp.
Fact: When your hair is growing, it does require a significant amount of blood flow. Once you lose your hair, not as much blood is needed and the blood flow to the scalp decreases. Therefore, a decreased blood flow to the scalp is not the cause of hair loss, but a result of it.

Myth #5

Wearing hats makes you go bald.
Fact: People who accuse their hats as being the cause of their hair loss think that wearing hats all the time prevents the scalp from breathing. Actually, hair follicles get oxygen from the blood stream, rather than from the air.

Myth #6

Hair loss is caused by clogged pores.
Fact: Clogged pores are actually a cause of acne, not of baldness. If common baldness were simply due to clogged pores, then rigorous shampooing would be all that was needed to maintain a full head of hair. This is obviously not the case.

Myth #7

Frequent shampooing causes hair to fall out.
Fact: When people start to thin they sometimes think that shampooing is the cause, since they notice hair in the tub. To prevent this, they begin to shampoo less often. The hair that would normally come out in the shower now builds up on the scalp. With the next shampoo, even more ends up in the tub only confirming the patient’s suspicion. Remember, hereditary baldness is not due to hair falling out, but rather by normal hair gradually being replaced by finer, thinner hairs. The simple solution is to shampoo every day and the excess hair in the tub will go away.

Myth #8

Only men suffer from genetic hair loss.
Fact: Balding is often thought of as a “man’s” problem, but the fact is that over 40% of women suffer from significant thinning throughout their lifetime.

Myth #9

Hair loss medications only work in the crown.
Fact: The main benefit of Rogaine (minoxidil) and especially Propecia (finasteride) is to slow down or halt hair loss, rather than to re-grow hair. Although initial studies showing the effectiveness of both Rogaine and Propecia were done on the crown, this doesn’t mean that the medications won’t work on other parts of the scalp as well. In fact, the medicines can work wherever there is thinning –- as long as the area is not completely bald.

Myth #10

Hair loss stops when you get older.
Fact: Once hair loss begins, it tends to progress over a person’s lifetime and never completely stops. However, the rate at which hair will continue to fall out is hard to guess. The younger you are when you start to lose your hair, the more likely you are to become very bald.

What is a “thyroid disorder”?

What is a “thyroid disorder”?

thyroid disorder

A thyroid disorder is fairly common. Located in the front, lower area of the neck, the hormones that are produced by this gland affects almost every part of your body – everything from your heart to your brain, to your muscles to yes, even your hair.

According to Dr. Robert DeMaria, otherwise known as Dr. Bob – the Drugless Doctor, a “main cause of hair loss among women is subpar or low thyroid function.” Other common symptoms of low thyroid function include cold hands and feet, yellow teeth, widely spaced teeth, depression, morning headaches, among other issues as well.

Combing Hair: 10 Tips for Proper Hair Combing

Combing Hair: 10 Tips for Proper Hair Combing

girl combing hair

Most people consider hair combing a routine activity. There are people who keep a particular hair style throughout their life. On the other hand, younger generations adopt new hair styles according to new trends.

To have a healthy hair, proper nutrition is required. General health has direct relation with the quality and quantity of hair. In order to make your hair beautiful, you need regular washing, use of hair oil, proper combing, etc.

Tips for combing hair:

  1. To choose the best comb, you must take into account the nature of your hair (soft or hard, short or long), convenience and style.

  1. Combing hair should be done with greatest care and concentration. If you comb without any care, you can cause damage to your hair.

  1. Combing hair should be done gently. A vigorous combing can encourage hair falling.

  1. Do not comb wet hair.

    First

dry your hair with a towel and then put some oil and gently massage it. After this is done, the combing will be easy and undamaging.

  1. Combing hair in the opposite direction of hairs must be avoided. This will cause hair falling.

  1. Vigorous combing in backward direction can cause traction baldness.

  1. Frequent combing can damage the hair follicles and the scalp. Combing hair 2 or 3 times in a day is sufficient.

  1. The tooth of the comb must not be sharp. The comb should not be pressed too tightly on the scalp.

  1. Clean the comb before and after use in order to prevent hair and dirt from depositing in the gap. Combing hair with dirty comb can be difficult and painful.

  1. Do not use other people’s combs. This will prevent fungal and bacterial infections

Female hair loss and men who don’t understand!

confident woman

It’s not that every male physician is insensitive, but it is sometimes difficult for them to comprehend how profoundly hair loss impacts women. Hair is very much a part of the female psyche.

But androgenetic alopecia, or AGA, is only one piece of the puzzle. Polycystic ovaries can also cause hair loss on the scalp. (They also can cause facial and body-hair growth.) Hair loss also may be triggered by diseases such as lupus. Women occasionally lose hair following substantial and rapid weight loss,  a high fever, or after having major surgery or extreme stress.

Sometimes our male partners don’t understand the emotions of recovery.  Not only did we have to endure the trauma that caused the hair loss, but the aftermath of having the added blow to our self esteem by having thinner or complete hair loss.  You just want to get back to your life as it was before the trauma.

We don’t necessarily want to look like a Herbal Essence model, we just want to look  like ourselves again!!!

Styling and Hair Loss?

Styling and Hair Loss?

There’s some truth and some fiction when it comes to hairstyling and Hair Loss.

hair loss

It is true that certain hair styles, such as corn-rows or tight ponytails, can cause hair loss. These styles put undue tension on the hairs. But as for hair sprays, perm solutions, or coloring resulting in hair loss there’s no truth to that idea. These applications may cause some damage to the hair strands. But the all-important follicles, located under the skin, stay safe.
And what about the idea that haircuts will make your hair grow back thicker and faster?

That’s wishful thinking. Everyone’s hair growth and length depends on their own unique hair cycle, which is based on both nutrition and heredity.

The longer your growth phase the longer your hair growth.
